Amsterdam, 27 mar.

AMSTERDAM Central station

Amsterdam has been brought to a virtual standstill after a massive power blackout swept across the city.

Major buildings such as hospitals and Schiphol airport as well as train and tram transport networks have all been left without power after an ‘overload’ of the electricity grid in the Dutch capital.

Dutch grid operator TenneT reported an overload on its power lines, which has left large parts of northern Holland without power.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport was left without electricity for a short time but has since been able to restore power using backup generators – a spokeswoman for the airport said.

Many hospitals were also left temporarily without power but are also now relying on backup generators.

Thousands of train passengers were affected by cancelled services in Amsterdam and throughout the north of the country,

Much of the country’s broadcasting – based in Hilversum near Amsterdam – has also been affected by the power surge.

It is not yet known when power will be restored.
